This year sees the 150th anniversary of the Battle of the Little Bighorn - an event that has become an important one in American history. It has also become something of a lightning rod. Various powerful influences have shaped the story of the battle for decades. The influences of bias, politics, trends, and assumptions have been brought to bear on the event - making the task of understanding it more difficult. Indeed, one could say that shortly after the Battle of the Little Bighorn ended, the battle of the narrative of the Little Bighorn began. However, there are two things that seem to have made understanding the battle easier. The first is documentation.

The Battle of the Little Bighorn is one of the most documented battles in American history. This has resulted in there being a large amount of firsthand material regarding the event. This can be helpful when trying to understand the battle. While some of the material may be influenced by various factors to make the battle more difficult to understand, the fact that such extensive documentation exists can still allow someone to piece together a rather coherent narrative of the event. Although it may sound like a difficult task to determine what material is safe to accept as free from influence, this is arguably better than having too little information regarding the event. After all, if there wasn't enough firsthand information regarding the event, it might not be possible to understand it accurately.

Technology has also played a role in making the battle more understandable as it has recently allowed for greater access to resources related to the event. This has made it much easier for research to be performed. As a result, narratives of the battle seem to be trending toward aligning more closely with the reality of the battle.

Although the Battle of the Little Bighorn has been rather difficult to understand in the past, the amount of documentation created, and the emergence of modern technologies has allowed the understanding of the battle to align more closely with what actually happened. This allows one to be optimistic that in the future, presentations of the event will be even closer to the reality of the event, allowing the battle to at last emerge from the shadow of mystery that has shrouded what happened so long ago along the banks of the Little Bighorn River.
