McCampbell, born on this day in 1910 was an American Navy pilot who became the Navy's all-time ace for shooting down 34 enemy aircraft during action in the Pacific Theater during World War II.

He was highly decorated, having recieved the Congressional Medal of Honor and Navy Cross among others. His 34 victories were all achieved in a F6F Hellcat. Two of his famous battle were the Marianas Turkey Shoot, and the battle of Leyte Gulf, both taking place in 1944.
