John Buford
Born on this date 1826, John Buford was a Union Cavalry officer who served in the American Civil War.

He would choose the union position on the first day of the battle of Gettysburg. His men held this position against Confederate infantry attacks until federal reinforcements arrived. His decision to hold this high ground has been credited as being a determining factor in the final outcome of the battle in favor of the union.
