Robert The Bruce Crowned King Of Scotland
Today in history Robert the Bruce was crowned King of Scotland. Bruce would take up the fight for Scottish independence where William Wallace, upon his death, had left off.
Interestingly, the day after the coronation, a cousin of Comyn, demanded to be allowed to perform the duty of crowning the new king as this had been a privilege of her family in Scottish history. That day a second coronation ceremony was held with Isabella MacDuff performing the honors.
According to Henty, Bruce allowed this repeat coronation to occur for two reasons. The first was to ensure the acceptance of the coronation by his countrymen by not breaking with tradition. Second, Isabella had connections to the
Scottish Comyn family and her crowning of him may help sway them toward his side in the coming war with England.
