Winfield Scott
Born on this day in 1786, Winfield Scott was a US general who also ran unsuccessfully for president. He led army regulars during the Mexican-American war in a successful campaign that brought about the war's end. The Duke of Wellington, upon hearing of Scott's victory, called him: "the greatest living general."
