U.S. Supreme Court Decides "Obamacare" Constitutional
On this date in history, the U.S. Supreme Court decided that the Affordable Care Act (aka "Obamacare") is constitutional.

The constitutionality of this Act had been challenged as it required most Americans to have health insurance coverage. Those who did not have health insurance would be penalized financially in the form of a new tax.

Opponents of the Act contended that the federal government did not have the power to demand that U.S. citizens obtain health insurance.

This decision came as a surprise to some as Chief Justice Roberts broke ranks with the more conservative leaning justices and voted in favor of the Act.
