Lincoln-Douglas debates begin
On this date in history, 1858 - three years before the American Civil War would begin - the first of seven debates between Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglas took place. The debates were not only centered around the slave issue, but served to propel Lincoln toward the nomination of President of the United States due to his performance.
