British begin bombarding Ft. McHenry
"The Star Spangled" banner is performed before most major sporting events in America. The song was actually first entitled: "Defence of Fort McHenry". It depicts the bombardment that occurred on this date in 1814 when it states "And The Rockets' Red Glare, the Bombs bursting in air, Gave proof through the night that our Flag was still there". Thus, the author is stating that the fact that the bombardment continued was proof that the American flag still was raised over the Fort and the Americans were still fighting.
